FRP Anti-Corrosion Panel

FRP Anti-Corrosion Panel
Product Introduction:
Runfeng FRP anti-corrosion panels are built on epoxy vinyl ester, with a 200 µm UV-stabilised gelcoat and an anti-ageing film on the weathering face, and a resin-rich chopped strand mat barrier behind it. The barrier holds the chemical back; the woven roving behind it carries the span. Panels come in 1.0–3.2 mm, up to 2,500 mm developed width and 11,800 mm long, in blue, grey or white.

Description
Technical Parameters

An FRP anti-corrosion panel is a glass-fibre reinforced plastic sheet built on an epoxy vinyl ester resin, with a UV-stabilised gelcoat on the weathering face and a resin-rich corrosion barrier behind it. It is used where steel struggles: pickling lines, plating shops, foundries, aluminium processing, wastewater covers and livestock buildings. Runfeng makes these panels in Tangshan, China, in 1.0 to 3.2 mm, up to 2,500 mm developed width and 11,800 mm long. The resin grade is chosen against the medium, its concentration and the service temperature - not against an average.

How the panel is built

Corrosion performance comes from the layer sequence, not from thickness alone. A thicker panel with a thin gelcoat can fail sooner than a thin panel built correctly. The layer build also varies with thickness: at the thin end the gelcoat and the corrosion barrier take a larger share of the section. Confirm the build for the thickness you specify.

1. Weathering face. A 200 µm UV-stabilised gelcoat, faced with an anti-ageing film. The gelcoat is the barrier the medium meets first; its thickness and cure are what decide whether the laminate behind it ever sees the chemical.

2. Corrosion barrier. Alkali-free chopped strand mat in a resin-rich layer, with no exposed fibre ends. This is the layer that carries the chemical load. Fibre ends are where wicking starts.

3. Structural laminate. Woven roving builds the tensile strength and stiffness needed to span between purlins. It is not the layer that resists the medium.

This is why the resin grade matters more than the thickness. Two panels of the same thickness - one on a general-purpose polyester, one on epoxy vinyl ester - will behave differently in the same hot-acid atmosphere or splash zone.

Applications

Pickling and galvanising lines

Electroplating and surface treatment shops

Foundries and die-casting plants

Aluminium processing

Ceramic and tile factories

Wastewater treatment covers and odour control

Livestock and poultry buildings

In all of these the panel is chosen for the same reason: the atmosphere or the spill is aggressive enough that galvanised sheet often fails early and stainless steel is either costly or itself vulnerable.

FRP compared with the alternatives

Criterion FRP (epoxy vinyl ester) 304 / 316 stainless Galvanised steel PP / PVC sheet
Acid and salt resistance Good across a wide range 316 better than 304, but chlorides cause pitting Coating fails at cuts and fixings Good, but limited temperature
Weight About one quarter of steel at equal thickness Heavy Heavy Light
Fixing on site Cut and drill with hand tools; no hot work Welding or bolting Self-drilling screws Requires support framing
Thermal movement Moves with temperature; needs oversize holes Low Low High
Repair Patch with resin and mat Weld Replace the sheet Weld or replace

Installation and fixing

Fixings go on the crest of roof panels and in the valley of wall panels, unless the profile's own installation instructions say otherwise.

Fixing spacing along the purlin is typically 600 mm or less. Both this and the purlin spacing depend on wind load and span - confirm for your project before ordering.

Pre-drill 2–3 mm oversize for thermal movement, unless the panel instructions say otherwise. Do not impact-drive; the laminate can crack at the fixing point.

Use a sealing washer. The washer seals the hole; it should not compress the panel.

Set laps by the profile and the roof slope. End laps are specified per project - confirm with us before ordering rather than working from a generic figure.

Use corrosion-grade fasteners. Galvanised screws often fail before the panel and leave rust staining that reads as panel failure.

Do not walk directly on the panels. Use crawl boards; FRP is stiff but brittle under point load.

What we need to quote

Chemical resistance is not a property of "FRP". It is a property of one resin in one medium at one temperature. Five answers let us specify correctly:

The medium, and its concentration

Service temperature, including cleaning or shutdown peaks

Whether oxidisers, solvents or abrasives are present

Panel profile, thickness and the area to cover

Colour and any RAL reference

Send these and we will confirm the resin grade and the panel build before quoting, or tell you the duty is outside what we can confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the difference between an FRP anti-corrosion panel and a gelcoat panel?

A: The gelcoat is the outer barrier on both. An anti-corrosion panel adds a resin-rich corrosion barrier behind it and uses a resin chosen for a specific chemical environment. A gelcoat panel with a general-purpose resin is a general-purpose surface product; the two are not interchangeable in chemical service.

Q: Is it suitable for my chemical?

A: This panel is built on epoxy vinyl ester. It covers many acid, caustic, hypochlorite and wastewater duties, but concentration and temperature decide whether a given duty is inside that range - send both and we will confirm.

Q: What thickness should I specify?

A: Standard thicknesses are 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and 3.2 mm; other thicknesses within that range on request. Thicker is not automatically better: thickness buys span and stiffness, while the resin and the corrosion barrier decide chemical resistance. A 3.2 mm panel with the wrong resin can perform worse than a 1.8 mm panel with the right one.

Q: What is the largest panel you can supply?

A: Up to 2,500 mm developed width and 11,800 mm long. The length limit is a 40 ft container, not the production line; cover width after profiling depends on the profile.

Q: What temperature can it handle?

A:  −40 °C to +130 °C for epoxy vinyl ester. The practical limit is usually set by the medium rather than the temperature alone - hot dilute acid is more aggressive than hot water at the same temperature.

Q: How does it compare with stainless steel?

A: At equal thickness FRP is about a quarter of the weight of steel, needs no welding and can be cut on site. Whether it costs less depends on the grade and the profile; we give a like-for-like comparison rather than a percentage.

Q: Do you publish mechanical test values?

A: Not as a single page-wide number. Bending and tensile values depend on thickness, resin grade and profile, and a report run on a different build tells you nothing about yours. The report for your specification is available on request before ordering.

Q: Can you match my profile and colour?

A: Send a cross-section drawing, or a sample of the existing sheet, and we will confirm before quoting whether it matches an existing profile or needs new tooling. Colours are matched to RAL.

Q: How long will it last?

A: It depends on the medium. We issue a 15-year written warranty where the resin has been specified against the actual medium, concentration and temperature; the warranty terms state those conditions and come with the order.

Q: How is it fixed?

A: On the crest for roofs, in the valley for walls, with sealing washers and oversize holes. See the installation section above, and follow the instructions issued with the panels where the profile differs.

Q: Do you supply the fasteners and sealant?

A: Tell us the substrate and the exposure and we will specify what is needed; supply is confirmed with the quotation.

Q: What do you need to start?

A: The five answers above are enough to start. Use the inquiry form at the bottom of this page and paste them in.
