Fiberglass reinforced plastic based on unsaturated polyester resin has the following characteristics:

1. Good corrosion resistance

Unsaturated polyester resin is a good corrosion-resistant material that can withstand general concentrations of acids, alkalis, salts, most organic solvents, seawater, atmosphere, and oils. It also has strong resistance to microorganisms and is widely used in various fields of the national economy, such as petroleum, chemical industry, pesticides, medicine, dyes, electroplating, electrolysis, smelting, and the light industry. It plays a role that cannot be replaced by other materials.

2. Lightweight and high-strength

The density of unsaturated polyester resin is 1.4-2.2g/cm3, which is 4-5 times lighter than steel, but its strength is not small, surpassing that of steel, hard aluminum, and cedar. This is of great significance for products that require weight reduction in aviation, aerospace, rockets, missiles, ordnance, and transportation. For example, the FRP components used in the main structure of the Boeing 747 jet aircraft reach 2.2 tons, effectively saving aircraft fuel, increasing speed, prolonging endurance, and increasing payload.

3. Unique thermal performance

The thermal conductivity of unsaturated polyester resin is 0.3-0.4Kcal/m · h ℃, which is only 1/100-1/1000 of metal. It is an excellent insulation material, and doors and windows made from it are the fifth generation of new energy-saving building materials. In addition, the linear expansion coefficient of FRP is also very small, close to that of general metal materials, so the connection between FRP and metal does not cause thermal expansion and stress, which is beneficial for its adhesion to metal substrates or concrete structures.

4. Excellent processing performance

The processing performance of unsaturated polyester resin is excellent, the process is simple, and it can be formed in one go. It can be formed at room temperature and pressure or cured under heat and pressure. Moreover, there are no low molecular by-products generated during the curing process, which can produce relatively uniform products. Due to its excellent processing performance, it has been widely used in the production of non-glass fiber reinforced materials such as handicrafts, imitation marble products, polyester paint, etc., in recent years.

5. Excellent electrical performance

Unsaturated polyester resin has excellent insulation performance and can still maintain good dielectric properties under high-frequency conditions. It does not reflect radio waves, is not affected by electromagnetic waves, and has good microwave transmittance, making it an ideal material for manufacturing radar covers. Using it to manufacture insulation components in instruments, motors, and electrical products can improve the service life and reliability of electrical appliances.

6. Good designability of materials

Unsaturated polyester resin is a composite material based on UPR as the matrix and reinforced with glass fiber as the reinforcing material. The two are processed in one go to form the final shape of the product.
